About Kaleem Ahmad, MD
Dr. Ahmad became a doctor because the subject fascinated him. “I was always interested in the new developments in medicine,” he explains. Hematology and oncology stood out as fields that are constantly active with research. Since joining the field, Dr. Ahmad has had the privilege of witnessing new developments such as immunotherapy, targeted therapies, bispecific antibodies, and more.
“For years,” he adds, “chemotherapy was the only option for advanced-stage cancer, and it only added a few months to a patient’s life.” Now, oncologists have a better understanding of the genetic makeup of cancer. This knowledge translates into better treatments. Patients can now survive long-term with a higher quality of life. “This is not only exciting for the patient,” says Dr. Ahmad, “It is very, very exciting for the oncologist. There is no other area of medicine that has made this much progress.”
These innovations have transformed the face of cancer care. “Diseases that were deadly in the past are not treated as chronic diseases,” Dr. Ahmad says. “Cancer is no longer a death sentence. Even for the non-curable types, people live longer with a higher quality of life.”
As a result, he says, “I do not feel depressed when I see a cancer patient. In fact, I am excited to present them with the options available.” He approaches new patients with a positive attitude while helping them understand their diagnosis and treatment. Often, he can provide good news, giving patients and their loved ones hope when they previously felt hopeless.
This positive approach, to Dr. Ahmad, is just as important as scientific advancement. He sees cancer treatment as a battle that the oncologist, patient, and family must work together to win. His job is to educate and make treatment decisions easy for the patient. By relieving pressure and stress, he gives patients the opportunity to focus on recovery and spend time with their families. “Seeing the patient’s happiness and their family’s happiness,” finishes Dr. Ahmad, “is the most rewarding thing.”
