About James W. Lee

“I was always interested in biology and life sciences,” says Dr. Lee. When he realized that he could use this knowledge to help other people, it became clear that medicine was his calling. His passion for oncology was identified during his residency at Georgetown University Hospital. “I saw how well I got to know cancer patients,” he says, “while also using cutting-edge treatments to help them.” This appreciation shaped him into the oncologist he is today.

The relational aspect of cancer care is still Dr. Lee’s inspiration. “When patients do well, it’s such a joy to share in their elation; and even when they don’t do well, it’s rewarding to help them through.” The work of an oncologist is intense, but it is also gratifying.

It also teaches Dr. Lee some lessons in return. As an oncologist, he helps patients through what might be the most difficult time of their life. He is often amazed by the perseverance they demonstrate, even in the face of severe illness or death. “My patients have taught me a lot about valuing life,” he says, “about fighting for more when you can, and letting go gracefully when you can’t fight anymore.”

For patients facing a new diagnosis, Dr. Lee reminds them that there is more hope than ever before. Treatments are becoming more effective and less toxic. In addition, revolutionary discoveries lead to new treatments that use the patient’s own immune system, or which take advantage of molecular targets to attack cancer cells with fewer side effects. This exponential growth has created cures for previously incurable diagnoses, and better prognoses even for advanced stage cancers.

“Even when we can’t cure cancer,” finishes Dr. Lee, “we can help patients live longer with less symptoms and a higher quality of life.”

Dr. Lee’s Philosophy

“I believe in treating the whole patient,” says Dr. Lee when describing his philosophy as a physician. This means more than prescribing drugs to treat cancer; it additionally involves minimizing side effects and focusing on quality of life. “I also emphasize giving information to patients,” he adds, “so they can understand their options and prognosis. This relieves a lot of anxiety and helps them decide what approach to treatment is best for them.”
