About Ian Horkheimer, MD

Initially, Dr. Horkheimer was unsure what field of medicine to specialize in. During his residency, however, he worked with one patient who had been diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia. That patient’s life was transformed by a simple pill, which was the most advanced treatment available at that time. “I said at that moment that this was where my interest lies,” says Dr. Horkheimer, with medical innovations that change lives for those struggling with diseases.

Dr. Horkheimer strives to provide care that is both cutting-edge and compassionate. He believes that no matter the situation, there is always something that physicians can do to improve the patient’s condition – whether by curing cancer or providing effective symptom management.

Cancer treatment is often a vulnerable time for patients. They are processing a difficult diagnosis and may be going through harsh treatments as well. Through these challenges, Dr. Horkheimer strives to provide a supportive presence. He develops strong, long-lasting relationships with patients, getting invested in their treatments and outcomes. Many patients at RCCA do well, and participating in this recovery journey is extraordinarily satisfying.

Patients also have plenty to teach. Dr. Horkheimer says, “I have learned that people are often much stronger and capable of far more than they realize.” He witnesses this strength daily as patients progress through their treatment journeys, and he always finds it inspiring.

He is also inspired by the great innovation occurring in the field of oncology treatment. Cancer research is constantly uncovering new discoveries that introduce new options or improve existing treatments. Dr. Horkheimer names the development of new therapies, such as immunotherapy, alongside improved diagnostic and surveillance technologies.
