About David S. Siegel, MD, PhD

Dr. David Siegel has been active in myeloma research throughout his medical career. The research opportunities were what drew him to the field. “It was a field in which I thought I could contribute,” he explains, “both clinically and scientifically.”

More importantly, however, he was drawn to the opportunity to build relationships. Cancer and myeloma treatments are long-term processes that take place at an extremely vulnerable time in the patient’s life. Patients often grow close with their oncologists, creating deep bonds with doctors who care for them on an emotional level, not just a medical one. In Dr. Siegel’s words, “it is an opportunity to establish meaningful personal relationships with people who need my help.”

Dr. Siegel emphasizes this relationship whenever he meets with a new patient. “I will take care of them as I would my brother or sister,” he says, “with love and respect.”

He also adds that relationship opportunities are available elsewhere, as well. “If given the chance,” he says, “patients can and often do become part of a social network to bring them together with other patients sharing the same burdens.” Patients become part of the family at RCCA, and they can also find connections with community resources and support groups. These connections can be invaluable when it comes to navigating the emotional struggles of cancer treatment.

Another important part of respectful care, according to Dr. Siegel, is understanding his own limitations. In his words, “I could not sit across the desk from someone to offer them care if I thought they could receive better care somewhere else.” Dr. Siegel wants patients to receive the best care available and will provide appropriate referrals if he believes another office will help them more effectively.

All offices, including Dr. Siegel’s, are becoming better at providing effective treatment. Dr. Siegel states that he is lucky to be part of many important breakthroughs in myeloma care. The field is moving quickly, and Dr. Siegel is confident that it will continue to progress with even newer and better treatment for patients with cancer and myeloma.
