Dr. Balar provides treatment coordination and management for all the above diagnoses and more. When working with patients, he prioritizes the latest advancements. He helps patients choose the treatment path that will provide the best outcome, with options including:
These treatments work to control and combat cancer, helping patients recover while maintaining a higher quality of life.
Dr. Balar graduated magna cum laude from the University of South Florida College of Medicine.
Dr. Balar currently serves as chairman of the Cancer Committee at CentraState Medical Center. In this capacity, he provides oversight and direction to help the medical center deliver a higher level of care for its patients.
Dr. Balar wanted to be a physician ever since early childhood. “The medical profession fulfills my curiosity for medical sciences and advancements,” he explains, “as well as the self-satisfaction of making a difference in a person’s life.” Oncology and hematology are unique in this regard. These fields are constantly evolving with new research and discoveries. They also give oncologists the opportunity to support patients through their most vulnerable moments.
To Dr. Balar, this opportunity is very rewarding. “Practicing oncology has allowed me to appreciate the meaning of my life,” he says. He uses all his knowledge and experience to provide the best care possible during a difficult time. In return, watching patients recover gives him a greater understanding of what is most important in life.
The most valuable lesson he has learned is “to appreciate life for everything it has to offer.” Every experience contributes to making a person who they are. Rather than labeling experiences ‘good’ or ‘bad,’ therefore, Dr. Balar has learned to embrace them all.
He avoids labeling people as well. In his eyes, it is important to treat individuals as more than patients. “I believe in treating a person as a whole,” he explains, “rather than simply looking at the illness.” Cancer behaves differently in every person, and individuals react to it differently as well. Effective treatment must be personalized. He takes every factor into account, including the patient’s overall health, their cancer’s unique molecular makeup, and their personal beliefs, background, and spirituality. This approach helps him develop a care plan to meet the individual’s desires.
To patients beginning cancer care, Dr. Balar urges them to remember that “everything will be okay.” He will be present to assist patients and their loved ones at every step of the journey, providing real hope for recovery or a better quality of life.
“In the past several years,” he adds, “there have been incredible scientific breakthroughs.” Many cancers that were previously thought to be untreatable now have reliable cures. Even cancers that are still incurable can be managed more effectively, letting patients maintain normal lives. With new therapies being discovered at such a rapid pace, it is easier than ever for patients to feel confident about their future. “There is nothing we cannot treat anymore,” Dr. Balar finishes.
