Dr. Avishek Kumar has extensive experience in the field of hematology and oncology, and has published in several peer-reviewed journals. He is presently the chairman of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Rahway, NJ. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine as well as Medical Oncology.

Trained in both geriatrics and oncology, Dr. Kumar is equipped to meet growing patient issues. Geriatric oncology is an increasing area of interest in the oncology community.

Following his graduation from Rutgers College with degrees in biology and archaeology, Dr. Kumar attended medical school at Saint George’s University. He completed his clinical rotations at university hospitals in New Jersey and New York City, and also participated in clinical electives in the United Kingdom and Prague. During his final year, he was selected to do a clerkship in Aerospace Medicine with NASA at Kennedy Space Center, where he presented on Bioartificial Muscle Models in Microgravity Environments.

Dr. Kumar did his residency in Internal Medicine at Saint Michael’s Medical Center, Newark, NJ, followed by a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Afterward, he did subspecialty training in Hematology and Oncology at the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center in Baltimore, MD.

After finishing his fellowship training, Dr. Kumar worked at the Compassionate Cancer Care Medical Group in California before moving back to his home state of New Jersey. While in California, he was appointed Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of California Riverside School of Medicine.

In addition to his work as a hematology/oncology specialist, Dr. Kumar is presently serving as a lieutenant colonel and flight surgeon/aerospace medicine specialist as part of the 482d Fighter Wing based in Homestead, FL. He has participated in numerous training exercises and been deployed overseas.
