“When treating a cancer patient,” says Dr. Kumar, “my priority is to preserve their quality of life while delivering effective care.” Cancer can be an emotionally challenging diagnosis, and its treatments are often physically taxing. Dr. Kumar helps patients navigate this difficult time while remaining as functional and comfortable as possible. He aims to reduce the amount of time patients spend feeling unwell, enabling them to spend meaningful time with loved ones and maintain a fulfilling lifestyle.

This goal is only possible through a personalized approach to care. He works with patients to adapt care plans to their needs, delivering effective therapies while preserving patient well-being. “By thoughtfully adjusting and tailoring treatment regimens,” he adds, “I achieve the best possible balance.”

Personalized care is also part of what makes now such an exciting time for the oncology field. “We are experiencing a thrilling era of innovation,” says Dr. Kumar, describing the development of targeted and personalized treatments that attack cancers with specific characteristics while bypassing healthy cells. “These groundbreaking therapies are not only more effective,” he says, “they also come with reduced toxicity.” This leads to fewer side effects and improved patient outcomes.

In addition to his work as a hematologist and oncologist, Dr. Kumar also serves with the 482nd Fighter Wing in Homestead, Florida, as a lieutenant colonel and flight surgeon/aerospace medicine specialist. He has participated in numerous training exercises and has also been deployed overseas. Dr. Kumar’s service was rewarded with the Air Force Reserve Meritorious Service Medal.
