Like many oncologists and clinical nurse specialists at RCCA, Susan Wilson is a generalist. She works with all types of cancer, including breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer. She also cares for patients with benign blood disorders, such as blood clotting disorders, anemia, hemochromatosis, thrombocytosis, and more.
Susan provides patient management. The clinical aspects of her practice include ordering and interpreting lab tests, assisting with infusion therapy, and helping patients manage their symptoms and side effects. She also provides education, emotional support, and counseling to support patients at every stage of their journey. Susan communicates openly with patients to set expectations and make sure their concerns are addressed.
Susan Wilson is a member of the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS). Founded by a group of oncology nurses in 1975, ONS is committed to advancing oncology to deliver high-quality and equitable care. It equips nurses with medical journals, research, education opportunities, and other resources to help them stay current with the latest developments in oncology.
Within ONS, Susan is the founding president of the Southern Jersey Shore chapter. She is responsible for making all these benefits accessible to oncology clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners across southern New Jersey, enhancing standards of care, not just at RCCA, but for other cancer centers as well.

Susan Wilson has been in nursing for over 30 years. “Health always interested me,” she says about her choice of career. For this reason, nursing was a natural fit. She developed an interest in oncology early in her career, inspiring her to seek board certification as an advanced oncology certified nurse.
Susan’s approach to care is patient- and family-centered. She treats her patients with empathy, getting to know them as individuals and not just as diagnoses. She also centers patients and their loved ones in every new decision to be made. She strives to educate people while also hearing their concerns, giving them agency, and making sure their care is aligned with their goals.
Getting a cancer diagnosis can be frightening. While it is normal to be concerned about the future, Susan reminds patients and their loved ones that “most people do well.” Cancer care may be a long journey, but it ends positively in many cases. Advances in treatment are only improving the odds of full remission or effective long-term control. “Patients who would previously be lost are now living,” adds Susan. The rapid improvements make now an exciting time in cancer care.
She also says, “It is OK to want limited information.” While RCCA is committed to patient education, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by a flood of new information. If patients would prefer to simply trust their care to the experts, that is also all right.
