About Melissa Baker

“Working in the field of stem cell transplantation is a profound privilege,” says Melissa Baker. “It’s about offering patients a second chance at life.” These cutting-edge therapies represent the frontier of hematology care, delivering outcomes once thought impossible. For Melissa, being part of that promise is both humbling and inspiring.

“The journey doesn’t end with the transplant,” she adds. While the therapy itself is a critical first step, the road to feeling well can be long. As the leader of JTCC’s survivorship clinic, Melissa is dedicated to supporting patients not just through treatment, but long into remission.

A key part of this is managing the long-term effects of treatment. Melissa specializes in treating chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a potential complication for transplant recipients. “I am driven by the opportunity to innovate and find new ways to alleviate symptoms,” she says, “ultimately restoring the patient’s quality of life.”

This commitment is the cornerstone of the survivorship clinic. Rather than focusing on simply surviving the disease, Melissa’s team concentrates on helping patients thrive. This means providing comprehensive care, proactive preventive measures, and management of late side effects, all while prioritizing the patient’s long-term well-being.

“We empower patients to navigate their new chapter,” says Melissa. “Guiding them, celebrating their milestones, and seeing them lead full, healthy lives is the ultimate fulfillment of the promise of transplantation. It is the reason why I love what I do.”
