“I think the most rewarding aspect of practicing in oncology is the bond that forms with patients and their family members,” says Gabrielle. Cancer and hematology care are long-term prospects. Over the course of months or years of treatment, patients work closely with their care team with frequent visits and phone calls. As a result, tight relationships often form. Gabrielle enjoys the opportunity to reach out and connect with the people she serves.
Building a relationship means sharing in her patients’ challenges and victories. “It is so rewarding to watch people overcome their illnesses,” she says. “It is just as rewarding to be a shoulder to lean on when they’re going through tougher days.”
While Gabrielle is dedicated to patient education, her patients have plenty to teach her in return. She is routinely impressed by the resilience and joy that they demonstrate even in their most vulnerable moments. “I have learned to appreciate the little things in life,” she explains, “and find happiness in the mundane everyday activities.” Even simple joys can give people the energy and positive outlook necessary to get through the challenges of cancer care.
“With a diagnosis as life-changing as cancer,” she adds, “there may be a time when you’re not able to do the things you took for granted.” She urges patients to make the most of every moment and create happy memories to hold onto.
Gabrielle loves her work in oncology, especially in the present moment. Constant research is leading to breakthroughs on almost a daily basis. “There’s always something new on the horizon, and new treatments are available where there wasn’t one before,” she says. Many of these new treatments result in positive outcomes that were previously impossible. To Gabrielle, this means that more patients can be offered real hope.
