About Robert F. Tassan

Dr. Tassan chose to specialize in benign hematology because he saw a need. The population of New Jersey residents who struggle with hematologic conditions is underserved, making it difficult to access the level of care they need to thrive. Dr. Tassan stepped in to make this care available. “I was also drawn by the complexity of addressing many of these conditions,” he adds. Devising an effective treatment plan for complicated needs is frequently satisfying.

In patient care, Dr. Tassan focuses on agency. He wants to empower patients to share in decision-making regarding their treatment, and to reassure them that their conditions are not malignant or cancerous. This starts with communication. “Addressing all questions and concerns thoroughly is of utmost importance,” Dr. Tassan explains. “I have learned that effective communication is key to building a strong doctor-patient relationship.” When the patient fully understands their condition, they are able to make informed choices about their care.

Now is an exciting time to work in hematology. Medical advances are introducing novel ways to manage conditions that were previously more challenging to handle. With ongoing research, case studies, and discoveries almost daily, there is always something new on the horizon. “The ongoing education and self-improvement keep the field exciting,” says Dr. Tassan.

Novel treatments also provide more and better options for patients. These options make conditions more manageable and produce positive outcomes that were previously rare or impossible, giving patients real hope about the future and their ability to thrive.
