About Kimberly Salwitz, MD

Dr. Salwitz was drawn to oncology and hematology for two reasons. First, she was attracted to the field’s position at the forefront of medical innovation. Oncology involves ever-changing science with new therapies constantly being developed, iterated, and improved upon. Over the years, she has seen the oncology community make tremendous strides for better patient outcomes. In her words, “an oncologist is never bored and always learning.”

Her second reason for joining oncology was the opportunity to become a caregiver. “It allows me to take care of people when they most require care,” says Dr. Salwitz. She takes great joy in providing the personal touch while supporting patients through their treatment.

As an oncologist, Dr. Salwitz strives to guide her patients at every step of their journey. She presents patients with all the available options, helps them understand each one, and supports them in making the best decisions for themselves and their families. She also works closely with other members of her patients’ care team to provide the most comprehensive service possible.

“I recognize the immense feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty that can come with a cancer diagnosis,” Dr. Salwitz adds. “It is my job to connect with each of my patients and understand who they are as people and what is important to them.” By understanding the patient’s values, fears, and goals, she can take a more personalized approach to care that centers on patients as individuals.

For Dr. Salwitz, this personal touch is what makes oncology care so rewarding. “I love to know when I have provided something that another oncologist could not,” she says. While many physicians can provide the same physical treatments, such as chemotherapy or hormone therapy, it takes a closer connection to support patients on an emotional level. “I really love figuring out what type of care and needs each of my patients has,” Dr. Salwitz adds, “and reflecting that in my process.”

She also sees this as one of the most important aspects of oncological care. People with cancer do not wish to be treated like cancer patients. They still want to laugh, spend time with family, and enjoy their favorite pastimes despite their illness. Dr. Salwitz’s goal is to make these things possible.

“A patient once told me that ‘This is the only place I am not treated like I am sick’,” says Dr. Salwitz. “That has always stuck with me, and it inspires me in what I do.”
