Dr. Julianne W. Childs’ first aspiration was not medicine. In fact, she wanted to join the Peace Corps. Believing she needed a skill set to provide more effective aid, Dr. Childs worked hard to get into medical school. However, while completing her internal medicine residency, she fell in love with oncology and hematology. She never joined the Peace Corps. Instead, she decided the best way she could help people was by remaining in the healthcare field as a medical oncologist.
“My grandfather died of lung cancer when I was quite young,” Dr. Childs notes. “Perhaps that steered me toward this field.”
She makes an effort to build relationships with the individuals she treats. In return, she has the opportunity to witness exceptional grace, kindness, humor, and strength. “Even on their worst days,” says Dr. Childs, “my patients never fail to surprise me with their ability to rise above their disease and not let it define them.”
This strength is one of the most important lessons Dr. Childs takes from her patients. Despite struggling with cancer or a blood malignancy, her patients continue to concentrate on their families and loved ones. They maintain an inner peace that inspires her to continue serving with passion and the best of her ability.
Even though a cancer diagnosis may be frightening, Dr. Childs urges patients to hold onto hope. Now is an exciting time for the world of oncology. Advances in treatment mean patients have a better chance than ever at a full recovery. She names the following exciting developments as reasons for hope with a cancer diagnosis:
No matter what the patient is battling, “treatment with dignity, love, and support is always possible,” says Dr. Childs.
