About Dr. Brandon S. Wilton
Dr. Wilton was drawn to medicine because it offers a combination of rigorous science and real, rewarding relationships. “No field does that more fully than hematology/oncology,” he says. Oncology research advances faster than almost any other medical field, with new breakthroughs made almost daily. At the same time, it demands that doctors work with patients through the most vulnerable moments in their lives. “It asks a lot of you intellectually and personally,” he adds, “and I like that.”
This intimacy, to Dr. Wilton, is the most rewarding thing about working in oncology. He understands that people feel vulnerable after receiving a cancer diagnosis. Effective care requires trust between the physician and the patient. Dr. Wilton aims to earn that trust and honor it, helping patients move beyond fear and gain confidence in their treatment plans.
Part of earning trust is understanding and meeting the person’s individual needs. “Every treatment plan,” says Dr. Wilton, “should reflect what matters most to the person in front of me.” He makes an effort to get to know the patient, their symptoms, and their priorities. In his words, “I believe good cancer care means paying attention from the very first visit.”
He also makes an effort to explain options honestly. Cancer treatment can feel overwhelming when patients don’t understand what is going on. By going over everything in plain language, he helps patients understand their options and make decisions they can feel good about.
Dr. Wilton is committed to supporting his patients at every stage, from first diagnosis through the completion of treatment and into survivorship.
Outcomes in cancer care continue to improve. Immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and other advanced modalities are transforming the results that patients and oncologists see from care. For many patients, these therapies are more effective than older options and can be better tolerated. “There are now real options for diseases that had almost none a short time ago,” Dr. Wilton adds. “I’m glad to be able to offer those advances to patients close to home.”
