Dr. Kumar originally studied to become an electrical engineer. During his graduate studies at New York University, however, he realized that his true calling was in medicine. “I could combine my love for analytical problem-solving with the privilege of caring for people,” Dr. Kumar explains. The opportunity to improve lives during vulnerable times makes medicine uniquely rewarding.
He chose to specialize in medical oncology because it builds the strongest bonds between doctors and patients. “I am allowed to walk alongside my patients and their families through their recovery journey,” he adds. “I offer both medical expertise and emotional support.”
When Dr. Kumar meets a new patient with cancer, he helps them understand that there is real hope. A cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming, invoking fears for the future. While it is normal to be concerned, Dr. Kumar emphasizes that treatments are improving every day. “People are living longer, fuller lives than ever before,” he points out. Cures are possible for cancers that were previously incurable. When a cancer cannot be cured, patients enjoy longer survival and a higher quality of life.
He combines hope with a philosophy of understanding. Dr. Kumar understands that every patient is unique in their background and perspective. He strives to listen carefully, ensuring that each individual he serves will feel supported, respected, and never alone at any stage of the process.
“The most rewarding part of this field to me is watching patients celebrate milestones and continue to enjoy life even while undergoing treatment,” says Dr. Kumar. In return, patients teach him invaluable lessons about resilience. Dr. Kumar is constantly inspired by the courage that his patients display in vulnerable circumstances and their ability to hold onto hope despite their situation. In his words, “it inspires me to be a better physician.”
Now is an incredibly exciting time to be practicing oncology. The field is continually advancing with new discoveries in targeted therapies, immunotherapies, and new types of chemotherapy that deliver better outcomes with fewer side effects. Dr. Kumar says, “Knowing that I can bring these advances directly to my patients makes me grateful every day to be in this field.”
Dr. Kumar is in private practice in Edison, NJ, where he serves patients with the RCCA team. He is also the former Chair of Medical Oncology at JFK University Medical Center and is affiliated with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
