About Andrew M. Bernstein, DO

A Brooklyn native, Dr. Bernstein first became interested in medicine during his high school years. He became a Westinghouse Science Talent Search Finalist and secured a research internship in the Pace University laboratory of Seymour Hunter, a pioneer in drug development. “As a high school student, I had the opportunity to work on a team that tested cancer drugs on bacterial models,” Dr. Bernstein recalls, adding, “that was when I realized I wanted to be an oncologist.”

Dr. Bernstein went on to pursue undergraduate studies in biology and complete a medical degree at New York University, where he was voted into the Psi Sigma Alpha Medical Honor Society. He then completed his internship and residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, where he was awarded Intern of the Year, Teaching Resident of the Year, and chief resident. Dr. Bernstein then completed fellowships in hematology and oncology at Mount Sinai Medical Center, where he also served as Chief Fellow.

For more than a decade since his certification, Dr. Bernstein has practiced in Morris County, NJ. He offers residents access to the latest diagnostics and evidence-based therapies in a convenient, community-based setting. In addition to seeing patients at Regional Cancer Care Associates’ Riverdale, NJ, office, Dr. Bernstein serves as Associate Director of Medical Oncology at Chilton Medical Center.

A dedicated runner who has completed more than 60 marathons in cities across the country and world, Dr. Bernstein says that the physical demands of his long-distance treks help him better appreciate the far more arduous course that people with cancer must navigate.

“Sometimes a patient will ask me how I’m able to run 26.2 miles. In responding, I always stress that the significance of finishing a marathon, or any other accomplishment, is based on where you are in your life and what you’re able to do. For someone who is going through chemotherapy, that’s their marathon, and I tell them how much I respect what they’re doing,” Dr. Bernstein says.
