“I would not say that I found oncology,” says Susan Harrison. “I believe that oncology found me.” Susan had no initial interest in oncology. When she joined her local hospital as a brand-new nurse, however, she was placed in the oncology unit. This chance development turned out to be life-defining. “That’s where I fell in love with oncology,” Susan adds. While oncology was originally just a job assignment, it became her passion and life’s mission.
Today, Susan has been a nurse in the oncology field for more than 40 years. She has worked at RCCA’s Belleville, NJ, practice for more than 28 years. Over the decades, her passion has only increased. She sees the difference that she makes in her patients’ lives and would not want to work anywhere else.
To Susan, the difference is in the relationships she forms. “I have met many patients and their families,” she explains, “and have gotten to know them as friends and neighbors.” Oncology care is often long-term, giving her the opportunity to get close with her patients while celebrating their successes and grieving their setbacks. As a result, she says, “I feel that I have a stronger bond with them than I would in other nursing specialties.”
She also admires how quickly oncology changes. The field is constantly evolving with new advances in treatment, giving patients more effective options that lead to longer survival, fewer side effects, and a better chance of remission. “You never stop learning in oncology,” Susan says. “It keeps us on our toes. Oncology is never boring.”
