“I was drawn to healthcare for several reasons,” says Megan Skinner, “but most significantly because my mother is a nurse and exemplifies exceptional caregiving.”
Her first position at Johns Hopkins University Hospital was an induction and consolidation unit for patients with leukemia. She quickly learned how impactful her role could be. “I found it meaningful to develop those close relationships with patients and their families,” she says, “Being part of their care team during such a critical time was profoundly rewarding.” She loves the opportunity to improve how a patient feels, either physically or emotionally.
A cancer diagnosis is an extremely vulnerable moment in any person’s life. The patient’s care team, therefore, is extremely influential. “Trust in the oncology team is a cornerstone of quality cancer care,” Megan emphasizes. “Building a therapeutic relationship is essential to navigating the journey ahead.”
Patients teach her valuable lessons in return. Megan is humbled daily and impressed by the resolve that her patients display in the face of difficult circumstances. In her words, “Working in oncology continually reminds me of the strength and resilience of the human spirit.”
Now is an exciting time to be involved in oncology and hematology. “The therapeutic advances we’re witnessing are remarkable,” she says. Innovations in chemotherapy are occurring simultaneously with groundbreaking work in targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and personalized medicine. The new treatments extend survival and meaningfully improve the patient’s quality of life during treatment. Says Megan, “Patients have more time to spend with loved ones and pursue what matters most.”
