Like many other members of the RCCA multidisciplinary team, Anne Marie Shaftic is a generalist with broad expertise. About Anne Marie Shaftic
Anne Marie Shaftic’s career in oncology was inspired by a family history of cancer. After watching family members struggle with their cancer diagnoses and care, Anne Marie was moved to join the healthcare field. “I thought I could serve best as a nurse,” she says. “I also enjoy interactions with people.” As a public-facing role, nursing gives her opportunities to meet new people daily.
These interactions have become one of Anne Marie’s favorite features of the job. Cancer patients often face enormous physical and emotional challenges. “I love putting a smile on a patient’s face or just making their life a little better,” she says.
When it comes to improving quality of life, Anne Marie has learned that empathy is key. Each patient’s struggle with cancer is unique, influenced by personality, life circumstances, and values. Rather than treating them the same, it is essential to listen and make sure that they feel understood. “And don’t rush them out the door,” Anne Marie adds. She creates time for patients whenever possible, giving them the space to learn, process, and prepare to face the next hurdle.
While cancer care is challenging, it is seeing more positive outcomes annually. Recent breakthroughs have introduced the ability to target cancers based on their unique genetic makeups, allowing for more precise treatments with reduced side effects. “It is exciting to see all the advances that have occurred over the past five years,” says Anne Marie, and she looks forward to what this means for her patients.
