Regional Cancer Care Associates (RCCA) is dedicated to delivering cutting-edge treatment at more than 20 locations near you in New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and the Washington, D.C., area, ensuring every patient receives the high-quality care they deserve.
That commitment is exemplified perfectly in May Abdo-Matkiwsky, DO, who treats patients at RCCA’s Sparta office. Dr. Abdo-Matkiwsky’s exceptional dedication to oncology and patient care is why she is being celebrated as this year’s medical honoree at the 44th annual Diamond Ball Gala at the Westmount Country Club in November. The event highlights the contributions of leaders in the medical community in the fight against cancer.
Dr. Abdo-Matkiwsky’s medical career is driven by her curiosity and her passion for helping people. “Oncology is scientifically challenging,” she explains, noting cancer’s impact on the human body in addition to the new therapies that are always emerging. “It also gives me a deep sense of purpose.”
Dr. Abdo-Matkiwsky has a special interest in breast cancer but treats a full range of cancer types and benign hematological conditions. She has nearly two decades of experience in treating patients and is highly awarded for the exceptional level of care she provides. She has been with RCCA since it was founded in 2012.
“Dr. May is an outstanding physician whose medical expertise is matched by her deep empathy and outstanding interpersonal skills,” said Jazmine Olson, development manager at the American Cancer Society. “She goes above and beyond for her patients, offering compassionate, knowledgeable care through every stage of their cancer journey. Her dedication to her patients is vital to the American Cancer Society’s mission to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families.”
When a patient comes to Dr. Abdo-Matkiwsky with a new cancer diagnosis, she begins by discussing her approach. “I want patients to realize that despite coming to a community practice, they will be getting cutting-edge, best-available treatments.”
She earned her medical degree from the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine, completed her residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Internal , and had a fellowship at Beth Israel Medical Center, Hematology/Oncology.
For more than four decades, the Diamond Ball Gala has epitomized elegance and philanthropy, becoming the longest-running gala in New Jersey. This prestigious event stands as a beacon of hope, having raised over $1 million in unwavering support of the American Cancer Society.
With each passing year, the gala has grown into a symbol of community resilience and shared commitment to fighting cancer. The shimmering legacy of this annual affair is reflected not only in its opulent gatherings but, more importantly, in the lives it has touched and the advancements it has propelled in cancer research. Attendees become part of a tradition deeply rooted in compassion and determination, contributing to a noble cause that transcends the glamour of the evening.
Since its establishment in 2012, RCCA has been at the forefront of community-based cancer care, with 90+ specialists across more than 20 offices in New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and the Washington, D.C., area. The organization is committed to delivering state-of-the-art treatments and access to clinical trials, ensuring comprehensive care for all patients.
During her time with RCCA, Dr. Abdo-Matkiwsky has witnessed many exciting breakthroughs in cancer care. “Now is such an exciting time,” she says. Personalized medicine, such as targeted therapy, delivers better results with fewer adverse effects. Together with improved detection methods, oncologists are curing diagnoses that were previously always terminal. Meanwhile, life expectancies are tripling in some incurable cancers. “We are doing much better at preserving quality of life as well,” she adds.
