Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a neurological condition in which a person has recurrent and unprovoked seizures. It’s a common disorder that affects people of all backgrounds. Epilepsy is characterized by abnormal electrical activity in the central nervous system, leading to seizures that can include involuntary movement and temporary loss of consciousness.
Often, when we think of a seizure, we picture someone having convulsions. But there are several different kinds of seizures, and some of them may be completely unnoticeable to an observer. These episodes might last for a few seconds to a few minutes. Types of seizures include:
- Tonic-clonic seizures are the most recognizable type of seizure. A person may fall to the ground, experience muscle spasms, and lose consciousness.
- Absence seizures can last just a few seconds and cause a person to blink rapidly or stare off into space. These seizures can occur in children and can be misdiagnosed as attention disorders or daydreaming.
- Simple focal seizures affect a small part of the brain and may cause twitching or sensory changes.
- Complex focal seizures cause a person to feel confused or lose awareness.
At Regional Cancer Care Associates, we provide infusion services for intravenous medications that your neurologists has ordered to treat your epilepsy. Our infusion services are available at convenient locations across New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, and the Washington, DC area.

Additional Information
Not everyone who experiences a seizure is diagnosed with epilepsy. Some patients have a seizure once and then never experience one again. Generally, when a patient has two or more unexplained seizures, they can be diagnosed with epilepsy. In many cases, doctors can’t pinpoint a specific cause for a patient’s epilepsy. However, certain conditions can lead to seizures, such as:
- Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
- Stroke
- Tumor
- Developmental abnormality
Your doctor may use imaging and other testing, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or an electroencephalogram (EEG) exam, to determine if your seizures have an underlying cause. Your doctor may also utilize blood work and neurological testing to help diagnose you.
Epilepsy can’t be cured, but many people can effectively manage epilepsy with medication, and some don’t experience any seizures when taking medication consistently and correctly. There are many types of anti-seizure medication. Your doctor will work with you to find the best medication and the correct dosage for you. If you have epilepsy, your doctor may also recommend lifestyle changes that can help prevent seizures, such as avoiding stress, abstaining from drugs and alcohol, and getting enough sleep.
